Façade of Mosteiro de Landim

About Us

One Monastery. One family. Ten generations.

Once upon a time there was an old and romantic estate...

01 The home

The estate

Once upon a time there was an old and romantic estate...

Who are we? A family home with centuries of history — formerly the Monastery of the Order of the Canons Regular of St. Augustine in the 11th century, turned into a private home in the 18th century. Ever since, generation after generation, it has remained within the same family, preserving traditions, cherishing its heritage and keeping family moments and memories.

From our parents, António Vicente de Sequeira Leal Sampaio da Nóvoa and Maria Rosa Dourado Eusébio Sampaio da Nóvoa, we inherited the responsibility of caring for this unique place and of passing it on — even more cared for and preserved — to our children and grandchildren. The story continues...

Time is never wasted on what we love.

— Alberto Sampaio

We treasure the legacy left to us and are devoted to keeping it intact for future generations. We are guided by the words of our ancestors, which inspire and lead us.

02 Family

Generations of family

Many generations of family have passed through here...

Sacred is this home of ours:

Protective, like a wing.

It guards and shelters our hearth;

Within it, with tenderness.

The heart finds its nest.

Love has its altar here!

poem by Sebastião de Carvalho

This poem, written by Sebastião de Carvalho, a distinguished lawyer and poet from Guimarães, married to our great-great-aunt Maria Henriqueta Leal Sampaio de Carvalho, perfectly captures the values instilled from generation to generation in our family. These four verses, set in azulejo on the house veranda, are part of all our memories, repeated year after year by everyone who pauses in that singular spot.

In 2025 we celebrated 250 years since the deed of sale of the Monastery of Santa Maria de Landim to our ancestor Manuel Batista Landim. The property has remained in the family ever since, now spanning ten generations, always keeping a close bond with the city of Famalicão.

03 Tradition

Wine

An award-winning harvest tradition...

The lands of Mosteiro de Landim stretch over more than twenty hectares. On this farmland a tradition of vine growing was born that endures to this day. So every year in September we gather family and friends of the family and of Landim to take part in the harvest, keeping up a long-standing tradition.

In 2005 we brought to market a wine from the Loureiro grape that we named Camélia — a wine that, in its very first year, won the award in the “Best of the Region” category from the Vinho Verde Region Wine Commission. This wine was discontinued in 2017.
